 “From Liberty to Libretto: Italian Cultural Contributions to Early America”

The Department of Transnational Italian Studies is delighted to announce, “From Liberty to Libretto: Italian Cultural Contributions to Early America”, a lecture by Dr. , executive director of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University, and founder of the "International Observatory for Cultural Heritage" at the same institution. The event is organized within Luca Zipoli's course "Philadelphia the Global City: The Italian Legacy across Time" (ITAL B240) and is open to the all the students enrolled in the class.

Speaker's bio

Barbara Faedda is the executive director of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University, where she conceived the International Observatory for Cultural Heritage. She is also an adjunct professor in Columbia’s Department of Italian. She received her Ph.D. in Legal Anthropology and Social Science from the Università Suor Orsola Benincasa di Napoli after studying at Sapienza Università di Roma. In 2019 Dr. Faedda was appointed as ambassador and permanent observer for the European Public Law Organization to the United Nations, and in 2022 she was named a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Among her publications: Élite. Cultura italiana e statunitense tra Settecento e Novecento (Ronzani Editore, 2020), and From Da Ponte to the Casa Italiana. A Brief History of Italian Studies at Columbia University (Columbia University Press, 2017).
